Manila, Philippines - President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo finally awarded the prestigious Presidential Merit Award to the late Francis "Kiko" Magalona yesterday. Kiko received the award for his support to Filipino music and contributions to the arts thru his own Patriotic way.
The awards ceremony was held at the glamorous Palace reception hall. Present at the event and the one who received the award was Kiko's wife, Pia Magalona, and their children. According to GMA News, Former Senator Vicente Sotto, Vic Sotto and Joey De Leon were also present at the event. Press Secretary Cerge Remonde was quoted as saying that Francis Magalona would be a good example to the youth.
Kiko's contribution to the Original Pilipino Music or OPM is undeniable. In fact, a lot of legistators are eyeing him to be included in the prestigious list of National artists for music. The nomination was moved next year following the cut off date for all nominations for this year was implemented.
Francis Magalona passed away last March 6, 2009 after succumbing to Leukemia.
