Star rapper Eminem sure owes it to his mentor Dr. Dre, who gave him the big break.
Eminem, real name Marshall Mathers, shows up at a music industry bash on Friday to pay tribute to the legendary Dr. Dre, who's responsible for catapulting 'Slim Shady' to fame.
The momentous event highlighted 45-year-old Dr. Dre receiving the Founders Award for career achievement at a Beverly Hills Hotel during ASCAP's annual Rhythm & Soul Music Awards ceremony.
Eminem delivered a short speech honoring Dre, and for never giving up on him.
"He believed in me when not many others did," the rapper tells the audience. "It would have been a lot easier for Dre to dismiss me like most people did: What's with the white guy from Detroit that raps with a funny voice? But he didn't. He stepped up to the challenge because he saw something in me."
Dre, on the other hand, tried to hold back tears, and paid tribute to his mother who got pregnant with him at the age of 15. He was also responsible for shaping careers of other big names such as Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, 2Pac, as well as producing for Gwen Stefani and Mary J. Blige.
Meanwhile, Eminem's forthcoming album, "Recovery," is set to hit top spot at the U.S. pop chart next week, his sixth consecutive no. 1 album to date.
An inseperable tandem. Gone were the days of Vanilla Ice, thank goodness. Bring it on, Slim Shady!
