The "circle" lens are cosmetic contact lenses that extends beyond the iris, making the eye look larger, hence, gives wearers an exaggerated "doe-eyed" look. This trend emerged recently after Lady Gaga displayed the look in her "Bad Romance" video, The New York Times reported.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the over-the-counter sales of nonprescription cosmetic lenses has been banned by law in the United States since 2005, but they are available online. All contact lenses are classified as medical devices and can only be distributed through licensed eye care professionals.

What Lady Gaga wears in her videos are so amusing, mainly because it focuses more on aesthetics than functionality. This is best exemplified in her recent trip (as in, a tumble) in London because those shoes are not orthopedic-friendly. In other words: Gaga's fashion is admissible in videos but not applicable in real life. This doe-eyed trend is no exception.

In its statement, the AAO said it "would like to alert consumers to the hazards of buying any decorative lenses, including circle lenses, without a prescription. Any type of contact lens is a medical device that requires a prescription, proper fitting by an eye care professional and a commitment to proper care by the consumer."

If lenses are improperly fitted, it may cause pain and inflammation, to more serious complications such as corneal abrasions, infections which can lead to blindness.

Now, is there an official orthopedic statement regarding those shoes, or did I just miss it?
