Michael Bromwich has been handpicked by President Barack Obama to take charge of the problematic government agency which handles oil and gas development, which is also scrutinized for negligence in overseeing.
Bromwich, a former assistant U.S. attorney and Justice Department inspector general, will be responsible for leading a reorganization of the Minerals Management Service, according to an announcement made Tuesday at the White House.
The said announcement commenced hours after Obama's prime-time speech to the nation on the Gulf's oil spill crisis. The White house has stated that Bromwich would be equipped with implementing far-reaching changes to the MMS current situation.
According to Obama' statement, "For a decade of more, the cozy relationship between the oil companies and the federal agency was allowed to go unchecked. That cannot and will happen anymore."
It was only last month that the director of the MMS, Elizabeth Birnhbaum, has threw in the towel after less than a year of service to the agency.
And the agency, which consists of 1,700 employees, has been criticized time and again for its conflicting roles, which has lead to allegations of being too soft with the oil and natural gas industry. Such as the insufficient review of BP'S deepwater drilling plans at the well, which is outpouring into the Gulf.
Going back to Bromwich, he was a federal prosecutor before he assumed the role of the Justice Department's inspector general from 1994-1999. This besides also being a courtroom lawyer of former White House aide Oliver North in the talked about Iran-Contra scandal, which involves illegal U.S. funding for rebels in Nicaragua.
So let's see if he could clean up the 'spill.'
BRAZIL BOSS DUNGA: WANTS MORE OUT OF HIS BOYS IN THIS YEAR'S WORLD CUP
Brazil's Coach Dunga |
Yet Brazil boss Dunga is quite unfazed over the victory in their opening match held at Johannesburg, and wants a lot more fire from his boys in future games.
"It wasn't our best match, but at least we got the win, and that's what matters now," says Dunga.
Maicon and Elano contributed second-half goals which gave Brazil a 2-0 lead, until the opposing team's Ji Yun-nam would surprise them with his 88th minute strike and last moment jitters. Dunga adds that the start is the most difficult of matches, coupled with long waits, the anxiety building up within.
Team Brazil, five-time world champions had to bleed for their victory, frustrated with North Korea's tight defensive tactics, especially in the first half of the match. And despite breathtaking offensive attacks, Brazil was unable to penetrate their opponent's three central defenders. Not after the interval.
Nevertheless, Brazil were able to create a number of opportunities, staring down at North Korea's impressive passing and defense.
Then full-back Maicon would make the big difference, firing an amazing goal with the outside of his right boot from an acute angle beating the goalkeeper, and also breaking the deadlock.
Says the Inter Milan defender, "It was my first World Cup match, I didn't cry but I was very happy with the goal I scored."
Go Brazil!
