You know that annoying question that could go on and on with your friends? It's been a century old debate, yes, but finally scientists have the answer!
The chicken.
Researchers have revealed in a report published recently that it all boils down to one protein, known as ovocledidin-17, which helps in the formation of the egg's hard shell.
It came to a conclusion that this essential ingredient in the formation of an egg can only be produced inside a chicken, according to sciendtists from universities in Sheffield and Warwick.
Says Dr. Colin Freeman, of Sheffield University's Department of Engineering Materials, "It had long been suspected that the egg came first, but now we have the scientific proof that shows that in fact the chicken came first."
And not only do scientists believe that this breakthrough discovery answers and old age question, but has practical uses as well.
Another Sheffield University researcher, Professor John Harding, has this to say: "Understanding how chickens make egg shells is fascinating in itself but can also give clues towards designing new material processes."
"Nature has found innovative solutions that work for all kinds of problems in materials science and technology. We learn a lot from them," he continues.
